What Matters Most at Work? Part 2: Humility

Second in our series on “What Matters Most at Work” comes an essential reminder about humility.

In our culture, we judge people’s value (including our own) based on the work they (we) do. We look down on certain jobs and idolize others. But in God’s economy, every job is done for God’s glory and therefore, all work has value before God.

When we think about building a career, we can often get distracted by our egos. We want to make the most money, receive the big promotions, and make a name for ourselves. This is a hard temptation to fight. Our pride loves to infest itself in our work.

When our work gets criticized, we take it personally. When we lose a job, we seem to lose all hope and fall into depression.

It’s essential to view our work as a responsibility that God has entrusted to us. This means that we are to be responsible to serve people through our work but it is not for our advancement. Rather than chasing status and prestige, we should focus on being responsible with what God has entrusted to us. If he has entrusted us with an executive position at a large company, we must steward that. If he has entrusted us with a delivery job, we must steward that.

Finding our identity in who we are as sons of God helps us to view our work as a chance to worship our Father and serve other people. This gives us freedom from pride and the ability to do excellent work, free from our egos.
